Why Audit Now
Two things changed in the first half of 2026. Model refresh cycles compressed — every major assistant now blends recent retrieval into most commercial answers, so your visibility can move (both directions) in weeks rather than training-cycle years. And AI answers became the default research step for a critical mass of buyers, quietly re-routing discovery that used to flow through search results you could at least see.
That combination rewards brands that treat GEO as an operational loop — audit, fix, measure, repeat — and punishes the set-and-forget approach. The fifteen checks below are sequenced to take roughly a day of focused work. For each, record a pass/fail and a note; the scoring section at the end turns your notes into a prioritized backlog.
Visibility Checks (1–5): Where You Stand
1. Run your buyer queries across all five models
Take the ten questions that most precede a purchase in your category and ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity. Record every brand named, in order. Pass: you appear in more than half of the answers where a competitor does. This single exercise usually surprises even confident teams.
2. Check your mention position, not just presence
In the answers where you do appear, where? First and second mentions carry the recommendation weight; a consistent fifth place is polite invisibility. Pass: your average position is within one rank of your strongest competitor.
3. Read how models describe you — verbatim
Ask each model directly: "What is [your brand]? What are its strengths and weaknesses?" Look for outdated pricing, discontinued products, wrong positioning, or a competitor's feature attributed to you. Pass: no material factual errors across the five models.
4. Test negative and comparison framing
Queries like "What are the downsides of [brand]?" and "[brand] vs [competitor]" reveal the sentiment models attach to you. A weakness repeated across models traces back to a specific public source you can usually find and address. Pass: criticisms are fair, current, and balanced by strengths.
5. Audit your citation footprint
Collect the URLs models cite when answering your category queries. What share are your pages, or pages that represent you accurately and positively? Pass: you hold meaningful citation share on at least half of your core queries.
Content Checks (6–10): What Machines Read
6. Verify your money pages render without JavaScript
Fetch your pricing, feature, and comparison pages with JavaScript disabled (or curl them). If the facts aren't in the raw HTML, most AI retrieval never sees them. Pass: every commercially critical fact exists as server-rendered text.
7. Confirm your crawling posture is intentional
Read your robots.txt. Are GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot allowed or blocked — and was that a decision or an accident? Many sites inherited blanket blocks from a 2023-era template and have been invisible to AI retrieval since. Pass: your allow/block list matches a written policy.
8. Check every fact-page for freshness
AI models quote your pages with dates attached surprisingly often. Pricing from last year, "new" features shipped in 2024, stale customer counts — each becomes a confidently wrong AI answer. Pass: pages carrying quotable facts were reviewed within the last quarter.
9. Structure one answer per heading
Sample your top ten organic pages: does each H2 section deliver a self-contained, quotable answer within the first two sentences? Retrieval selects passages, and passages that lead with the answer win. Pass: at least seven of ten pages follow answer-first structure.
10. Validate your structured data and entity consistency
Organization, Product, and FAQ schema present and error-free; identical brand name, description, and category across your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikipedia (if applicable), and top directories. Models cross-reference entities — inconsistency reads as uncertainty. Pass: one canonical description everywhere.
Authority Checks (11–15): What the Web Says About You
11. Map the sources that own your category's citations
From check #5 you have the cited URLs. Roll them up by domain: typically three to six domains dominate AI citations for an entire category. Pass: you are present — and correctly represented — on at least half of them.
12. Audit your review-platform presence
G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Google reviews — whichever pair matters in your category. Models summarize review themes directly into answers. Pass: reviews are recent (last 90 days), voluminous enough to matter, and the recurring criticism is one you've actually fixed.
13. Search for yourself on Reddit and community forums
Models weight authentic community discussion heavily for "best X" queries. Is your brand discussed? Accurately? Are threads from 2022 describing problems you solved still the top results? Pass: recent, substantively accurate community presence exists.
14. Count your third-party comparison appearances
Roundups and comparison articles ("top 10 X in 2026") are citation magnets. How many current-year roundups include you? Pass: you appear in the majority of this year's significant category roundups; the gaps are your PR target list.
15. Verify your competitors aren't defining you
Ask models "[competitor] vs [you]" — then check who the cited sources belong to. If competitor-authored comparison pages dominate answers about you, their framing is your AI reputation. Pass: neutral or your own sources anchor those comparisons.
Scoring Your Audit
Sequence repairs by speed of effect: factual corrections and content structure (checks 3, 6–10) surface in AI answers within weeks because they ride the retrieval path. Review velocity and community presence (12–13) compound over one to two quarters. Earned citations on category-defining sources (11, 14) take the longest and matter the most.
The Bottom Line: An audit is a snapshot; GEO is a loop. The brands winning AI recommendations in 2026 aren't the ones that ran the best one-time audit — they're the ones that instrumented these fifteen checks into continuous monitoring and re-prioritized every month based on what actually moved.
